Dear Joe Bowler,
What is the standard rule for wearing tennis shoes during league/tournament play? Is this legal? I have seen one or two bowlers bowl with tennis shoes. Would this render the individual's game be forfeited? Please advise.
Signed,
Barefoot in the Park
Dear Barefoot - Thanks for sending in the first question of 2008-09 season.  After extensive research on this subject, I was unable to find any USBC or league rule that specifically said that wearing tennis shoes was prohibited.  However, Rule 12, which covers defacing the approaches.  states that as long as the approaches are not defaced or residue is not left behind, they can be worn.  After saying that, I would check the Bowling Center rules.  They may have a posted rule that says bowling shoes are mandatory.  If they don't, then tennis shoes are legal as long as they don't violate Rule 12.  Hope that answers your question.

Dear Joe Bowler,
During league, I saw one of the opposing bowlers apply EZSlide to sole of his bowling shoe.  Afterwards, bowlers were complaining of sliding too much when they were bowling.  Is powder allowed to be used on bowling shoes to help bowlers slide?  Thanks for your help.
Signed,
Big EZ
Dear Big EZ - This is actually covered in the above question.  Rule 12 states "that approaches are not allowed to be defaced, nor is residue permitted to be left behind on the approach."  Therefore, I would say that EZ Slide would not be permitted based on that explanation.  I know that at USBC Nationals powder and/or EZ Slide is not permitted, period.  They must have a pretty good reason.  If you have a problem with someone using it, bring it to the attention of the league President.  He/She should be able to get its use stopped.  Hope that helps!  Thanks for the question. - JoeB.
